South Africa

Contact with all HDSS sites was successful in South Africa. At the end of 2019 and start of 2020, CPSP’s researcher Maxine Brassell obtained data from all three sites and began establishing a picture of the pesticide suicides in South Africa. Following this it was decided that a scoping review would be performed for the continent of Africa to determine which surveillance systems are currently in place and how they are currently operating. This scoping review is currently in draft stages and is being performed by the South Africa and Africa team, with Maxine and Ayanthi Karunarathne taking lead on it. In addition to this a case study paper is also being drafted for the African region based off the current findings from the HDSS sites in Africa.
