Prevention of Pesticide Suicide Poisoning through awareness and education activities by active involvement of key communities in one Northern Indian state (2020 – 2021)

India, with 18% of the world’s population, has a much higher proportion of the world’s suicide burden. Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA) works through its 22 hospitals and community health and development programmes in North, Central and North-east India. EHA hospitals in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh report significant numbers of presentations related to pesticide suicidal cases and this project is a response to requests from community members to respond to this issue.

The main objective of this pilot initiative is to understand how rural communities respond to pesticide use and pesticide suicides. This pilot project focuses on the general community, including young people and other important key stakeholders such as govt. institutions, civil society organisations, suicide survivors, their family members through awareness/education, skill building, sensitization/dialogue and advocacy activities.

The main objective of the project is to empower communities to address the issue of pesticide poisoning and to take action for their wellbeing and safety. The project will be focused on

Chharatpur, Madhya Pradesh.

Expected Outcomes are:

  1. Prepare communities to address pesticide suicide poisoning (Knowledge).
  2. Promote suicide prevention within communities to support the well-being (Action).
  3. Improved suicide data collection from the communities.

Expected results:

  1. Communities are empowered and aware about the effects of pesticide poisoning and are able to take actions to prevent suicides related to pesticides.
  2. Community and various stakeholders build knowledge and capacity on uses of pesticide and suicide prevention
  3. Communities have mechanisms for gathering information, providing support and working with a range of stakeholders for prevention of pesticide suicides, and are able to speak out and take actions for their wellbeing.
